| | Dear readers!
Currently, the course for the further development of the European Union is being set. This newsletter therefore focuses on the current economic policy of the EU, in particular reflecting on the most recent EU Council decisions and the Commission‘s loosening of Member State aid rules – both of which threaten to further increase social differences within the EU. Against the background of the incipient global economic crisis, we also address the need for a Universal Basic Income across Europe. The current disputes in the Union around a safe return to work are described in a shop steward’s account of how he experienced the re-opening.
Our first webinar after the summer break is dedicated to the effects of the lockdown on art workers – who were usually active under precarious conditions already before the lockdown: Support Art Workers, 4 Sept., 18:00 (CET).
Good news from the left in Croatia: In an interview with Katarina Peović, the recently elected MP for the green-left coalition, we learn more about the reasons for their success, their political programme, and European cooperations.
We wish you stimulating reading!

Covid-19 has led to a dramatic economic crisis. The EU has modified the strict State aid rules to such a degree that States can now help their national economies virtually at their own discretion. What at first sounds sensible comes with a catch, however, since it results in the strong becoming even...

Why Universal Basic Income?
|
By Walter Baier

Let me start by showing where the problem lies: right now, across the EU, there are over 14 million people unemployed, and millions who have been furloughed or who are working precarious jobs. And yet we are only at the start of a global economic crisis, the extent and duration of which no one can...

After the death of my colleague and friend, I became the main trade union representative at my workplace, a small charity helping disabled people in Lambeth (London). As many other union activists across Europe, I am now involved in the struggle of workers to a safe workplace…
