In Bulgarien wurden am 12. Mai vorgezogene Parlamentswahlen abgehalten. Sie waren eine Folge des Rücktritts der regierenden Partei GERB, der durch beispiellose und im ganzen Land stattfindende massive Proteste im Februar durchgesetzt worden war.
In den letzten beiden Monaten wurde Bulgarien, das passivste Land auf dem traditionell kriegerischen Balkan, von Protesten erschüttert. Seit Anfang Februar sind viele Bewohner/innen in den meisten Großstädten des Landes auf den Straßen, um gegen die Erhöhung der Strom- und Heizkosten zu protestieren. Nach nur wenigen Nächten mit Zusammenstößen zwischen Polizei und Protestierenden trat die Regierung von Bojko Borissow und seiner Partei GERB zurück.
