Trump’s Jerusalem Move & Israel’s Gaza Massacre Flout International Law & Human Rights

The left faction in the European Parliament, the European United Left/Nordic Green Left (GUE/NGL) states in a press release that “the international community must place the Palestinian people under its protection.”

"GUE/NGL strongly condemns President Trump’s decision to recognise Jerusalem as Israel’s capital, thus legitimising Israel’s apartheid policies against Palestinian Jerusalemites. Trump’s decision undermines the perspective of the two-state solution and the peace process. It shows blatant disregard for international law, the UN charter, and UN Security Council resolution 478.

East Jerusalem is occupied territory and the status of the city has to be resolved through direct negotiations on the basis of international law. Under UN General Assembly resolution 181 (1947) the whole of Jerusalem was established as a corpus separatum under a special international regime.

GUE/NGL condemns the ongoing massacre of Palestinians in the Gaza Strip. They are protesting to demand their basic human rights including the right of return, which Israel continues to deny. The EU must put pressure on Israel to end the use of live fire against unarmed Palestinian protestors, which has claimed dozens of lives and caused thousands of injuries.

We call on the EU to suspend the EU-Israel Association Agreement. The international community must place the Palestinian people under its protection.

As Palestinians mark the 70th anniversary of the Nakba we declare our solidarity with the Palestinian people and their struggle for freedom, justice and equality. We reiterate our support for the two-state solution on the 1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital."
