A good society today is conceived as a mix of political democracy and … a capitalist market economy. In this view, capitalism is seen as complementary to democracy, but clearly distinct from it. A capitalist economy is not necessarily perceived as a democratic order in itself; it can be undemocratic or democratic, as long as it goes together with a democratic political order that will counterweigh, even outweigh, the despotism of capital and free markets.
